Stephen ("Steve") Gary Monken
On May 25, 2025, Stephen ("Steve") Gary Monken passed away peacefully with his family by his side.
Born on September 28, 1950, in Normandy MO, Steve soon moved with family to Los Angeles, where he spent his childhood. Here, he also met the love of his life, Susan (“Sooz”) in 1973. They married and shared a beautiful 52-year journey together as devoted partners and soulmates. Together, they raised two wonderful daughters, Sarah and Emily, who were the light of his life.
In high school, Steve was the captain of his high school’s sailing club, but soon became an avid cyclist, training with Ted Ernst and the South Bay Wheelmen in preparation for the 1972 Olympics. His graduation from high school coincided with the Vietnam War, so he instead decided to serve his country by enlisting in the US Air Force. Upon returning, he became a dedicated scholar, earning his undergraduate degree from Sonoma State University and completing master’s-level work at Pepperdine University. For fun, Steve and Sooz enjoyed ice dancing, hiking, bicycle riding, and traveling. After many years in California, he and his family settled in Rutledge, Tennessee, where he spent over three decades building a life rich with friendships, family, and memories. During his time in Tennessee, he also enjoyed sailing, kayaking, as well as working on the house and on cars.
Steve is survived by his beloved wife, Sooz, his daughters, his son-in-law, James, and his two brothers, Michael (“Mickey”) and Dennis. He was a special individual whose warmth, kindness, and humor left a lasting impression on all who knew him.
Steve has now begun his next great adventure and will be deeply missed.
