Philip L. Sibert

Philip L. Sibert, 75, died of respiratory failure on Friday, May 23, 2014, at his home in Dandridge, Tennessee. Phil Sibert was born in Frederick, Maryland, on February 17, 1939 to L. Lewren Sibert and Anna Ruth Grove Sibert, growing up there with his older sister Barbara and younger brother Lew. He played little league baseball with the South End Civic Association from its inception in 1951 and developed an interest in photography at an early age. Phil graduated from Frederick High School and attended Gettysburg College in Pennsylvania. A sports car enthusiast, Phil enjoyed traveling to Watkins Glen, Virginia International Raceway, Marlboro Speedway, and other racetracks with his father and brother to watch automobile races. He formed a model car racing club for local boys and girls in the Frederick area and organized a series of races on their behalf. He was also active in local autocross events, driving his 1957 Porsche Speedster and competing with friends Art Huddleston, Ron Grable, and Tony Adamowicz (two of whom later became professional racing drivers). Phil had a long Federal career in Computer Science, beginning as a computer programmer at the Social Security Administration and ending at the Department of Energy overseeing non-classified computer security. Phil married Hope Kwiatkowski in 1967 and together they raised two children, Steve and Cheryl. The couple enjoyed traveling, fine dining and sailing the Chesapeake Bay. Phil was active in promoting boating safety and a Past Commander of the Dundalk Power Squadron. Phil and Hope retired in 2003 to Tennessee and enjoyed touring the Eastern United States in their motorhome and attending formula One, NASCAR and IndyCar racing events. Phil was an active member of Chestnut Hill United Methodist Church where he shared his love of music by singing in the choir, and his favorite project was Change for Children. Phil is survived by his wife Hope and their seven fur kids (Tommy, Kali, Lucky, Bobbie, Grayzie, Bootsie, and Dini); son Stephen C. Sibert of Shady Side, MD; daughter Cheryl Sibert Galliher (and husband Michael) of Columbia, MD; brother L. Lewren Sibert, Jr. and sister-in-law Sharon Sibert of Tampa, FL; brother-in-law M.
